Bougainvilleas are thorny shrubs native to eastern South America. The wonderful colors we see are not flowers, but pieces of paper surrounding very small tubular flowers, white or cream. Feed your growing bougainvillea with a high-potassium fertilizer in spring, mid-summer, and fall, then mulch the soil around the plants with a fresh layer of compost.
