Jasmine Care: How to care for jasmine plants

Jasmine is a tropical plant with over 200 different species. This plant produces beautiful small star-shaped white flowers that often have pink highlights on the petals. Not only is it beautiful, but the jasmine flower also has a soothing scent that calms your body. I love the scent of jasmine; In fact, I named my daughter after this elegant plant.

Jasmine-flowering

I had never really grown jasmine plants in my house until recently, and now when I enter my house, its off-scent is the first thing that comes to me. Caring for tropical plants can be tricky, so in this guide, I will give you the tools you need to keep your jasmine plants thriving.

How to plant and maintain jasmine

Soil - The soil in which to plant your jasmine plant will vary slightly. I like to use an organic mix of fine materials and bark, peat, and other soils for good drainage.

Sun - Jasmine plants like bright sunlight, so if the plant is indoors, make sure to get up to four hours of sunlight a day. Having the plant in front of the south-facing window will do wonders for its growth. During the winter months, the plant does not need direct sunlight.

Temperature - Like a tropical plant, jasmine plants are able to withstand hot and humid temperatures, but they do not tolerate cold winter temperatures. When growing jasmine, try to keep the temperature between 60 and 75 degrees Fahrenheit. After the plant blooms, you can keep the plant in a cool room, but not colder than 41 degrees.

Water - Jasmine plants need a lot of water, especially when they are flowering. It is best to keep the soil slightly moist at all times. The plants should be watered weekly, but if the soil dries out before that, the plant should be watered as soon as possible.

Fertilizer - When applying fertilizer to the jasmine plant, fertilizer rich in potassium and phosphorus should be used. This type of fertilizer helps to extend the flowering time of the plant. Indoor jasmine plants should be fertilized twice a year, but during the growing season in spring and summer, liquid fertilizer can be applied to the plant every few weeks.

Growing Jasmine Indoors

Jasmine will thrive indoors if given proper care; In fact, they can grow up to two feet each year. This plant needs a lot of sun, so if you do not have a south-facing window where you can get a lot of suns, during the summer months the plant will benefit from a few hours of sun. The flowers bloom as autumn comes. Cool, well-circulated air will encourage the formation of winter flowers. If the temperature is too hot, the plant will not bloom.

Pinching and pruning

When you start to see new growth in the jasmine plant, pinch the stems to encourage growth. This process should be completed within the first two years of the plant's life, and you should only pinch the top half-inch of the stem. When flowering in season, you should prune the plant.

You need to remove dead leaves or complex stems from the plant. In addition, remove any diseased parts of the plant to take care of the spread of the disease. If you train to grow your plant in a certain way, you should also cut the unruly stems.

Spreading

The best way to spread jasmine is to use cuttings. The cuttings should be about three inches long and have two or three sets of leaves on top of it. To encourage cuttings to take root, they should be planted in a soil mixture containing peat moss, sand, and other well-drained soil. Cover the plant with a plastic tent to encourage growth; This can be easily made from a plastic bag. Place the plant in a well-lit room at about 65 degrees Fahrenheit. In about four weeks, you will see new growth, indicating that the plant is rooted. Allow the new plant to grow until the roots fill the starter pot, then transplant it in the early spring of the year.

Winter care

Jasmine fruits in winter Are easy to maintain, but the amount of sunlight, water, and fertilizer should be minimized. In addition, the plant will look good in the cold rooms of your home; The plant can tolerate cold winter months indoors until the temperature drops below 40 degrees Fahrenheit.

Common problems experienced by jasmine plants

Since Jasmine is a tropical plant

one of the most common problems associated with them is rust and blight. Both of these conditions cause damage to the leaves; It can affect the color of the leaves, cause the leaves to rot, and it can cut off young stems or offspring taken from a mature plant. Requires baking soda spray and plenty of ventilation to get rid of such fungal problems. If these problems persist, you should clean the pot and roots to make sure the disease is gone.

Aphids, whiteflies, and insects absorb the vitality of the jasmine plant and cause damage to the plant, but caterpillars, larvae, and networks can also damage the leaves. The best way to get rid of most pests that can infect your jasmine plants is to create a soap solution that you can apply to the leaves of the plant. If you know what an insect is, you can target it with an insecticide spray.

If you are looking for a plant that will give your home a wonderful scent when it blooms, then Jasmine is perfect. Although they are tropical plants, they are not difficult to refresh indoors.
