Easy care houseplants that don't need much more than water

Easy care houseplants

These low-maintenance houseplants add greenery and color to any home without requiring much from you other than the occasional watering. You don't need to be a gardener to keep these houseplants alive. Low-maintenance and suitable for beginners, these plants require little water from time to time. So go ahead and add some fresh greenery to your home. Regardless of your skill level, these beauties will thrive in your home.

1 Peperomia

Peperomias are a diverse group of small, easy-care houseplants with waxy and often very hard leaves. Some of our favorite varieties include Ripple Peperomia, Watermelon Peperomia, Baby Rubber Plant, and Silverleaf Peperomia. Its waxy, colorful foliage adds a splash of color to any room without taking up too much space.

2 Grape Ivy

'Ellen Danica,' the variety shown here, is also known as oakleaf ivy because its leaves are cut more deeply than other types of grape ivy. No matter which variety you choose, the glossy, deep green leaves add an interesting texture to a room. Its tendrils easily cling to a trellis or a stake for a vertical display. Although it's a vine, grape ivy has a high climbing habit, so it's the perfect choice for a lush, elegant-looking indoor hanging basket.

3 Norfolk Island Pine

Outdoors, a new tree can be a big investment, but simple indoor trees can make for affordable yet spectacular houseplants for beginners. The secret to keeping a Norfolk Island pine healthy indoors is to give it bright but indirect light. In low light, the lower branches turn brown and fall off. The soft texture of this plant adds a cozy, woody feel to any room. It will look great when decorating for Christmas.

4 Chinese Evergreen

The leaves of this plant come in various shades of silver, gray, green, pink, and red, making Chinese greenery a great choice for brightening up low-light areas of your home. You'll often see them in a shopping mall or airport planter because they're so versatile and durable, yet attractive.

5 Dieffenbachia

Several closely related species share the name Dieffenbachia; They all have cane-like stems and white or cream-colored evergreen foliage. Its large, green, and white leaves add a tropical touch to any room in your home. One of the plant's common names, dumb cane, refers to the effect of consuming juice. It can irritate the mouth and throat, making it difficult to speak.

6 Snake plant

This easy-going succulent plant seems almost immortal. Snake plant tolerates low light and low water while maintaining their beauty. You can find many varieties with different leaf shapes and patterns like the ones shown here. Any snake plant adds unbeatable texture and strong vertical lines with its sword-shaped leaves.

7 Philodendron

A heart-leaf philodendron is simply adorable with its glossy, heart-shaped foliage and fluttering vines. Plus, it fits well in low-light areas and doesn't mind if you forget to water it once or twice. Its trailing stems look especially beautiful cascading down a shelf or hanging basket.

A successful small garden requires a big idea

You can let a large garden develop. And by 'large' I mean a garden more than 80 feet (25 m) long. All of the most successful small gardens I've seen lately have a strong idea behind them. In a small space, you can see everything at once, so it's important that everything looks good together. This principle applies regardless of shape, although many small gardens are wider than they are long. See here for general tips on the Shallow Wide Garden . Here are three successful small space garden ideas to inspire you. A plant-lover's garden After visiting Philip Ostenbring's garden (open once a year for NGS), I realized that a small outdoor space for unusual plants is a wonderful display area. There is no need to plant in a small space, in threes or in drifts, as the plants are very close to you. Each model looks great in a courtyard, terrace or patio garden. Whereas if you dot a variety of single plants around a large garden, everything can look out of p

Corner bench and vertical garden This clever garden is a brilliant use of space. Instead of sacrificing seating, the designer created a tall bench and placed shade-loving plants underneath. On the outside of the house, two rows of wall-mounted plants catch

Great Designs for Container Groupings

Once your single containers are ready to merge It's hard to fail with a group of containers. Any size group, from a simple couple to large multiples, can enhance any outdoor space. Open patios and decks become softer and more intimate when you place pots around them. A straight and simple outdoor path lined with containers can become a wave of sorts—a formal one with some plants or an informal path with others. You never know what you'll come up with by placing one pot next to another or a particular plant with others. Once you start experimenting, you'll notice many places where a container is grouped. 1. Combine bright colors This collection of colorful pots introduces the viewer to the vivid color scheme in the beds behind it, mainly blue flowers. However, to maintain exclusivity, pots get exclusive rights to colors like magenta, pink and chartreuse. 2. Formal lateralization A combination of papyrus and vases always looks elegant, but when placed side by sid
