Early-Blooming Spring Flowers That Bring the Sunshine

 Early-blooming spring flowers

Blooms in early spring are a sure sign that milder weather is coming. These bulbs and perennials provide a splash of color before many plants bloom after a long winter. Once you see these flowers, you'll know it's soon time to work on your garden!

1 Pansy

Cold Weather Pansies prefer cool spring or fall blooming weather. This short-lived perennial is usually considered an annual to provide color in early-season flower beds, containers, and window boxes. Petals can be any color from white to almost black, and everything in between.

2 Yellow Trillium

Yellow trillium is a true spring plant: when its flowers die back at the end of the season in June, the foliage retreats. However, its marbled leaves and delicate yellow-white flowers are a welcome sight in April. If you're planting a woodland-style garden, combine it with other shade-loving plants.

3 Hellebore

Also known as the Lenten rose or the Christmas rose, hellebores make spring flowers with delicate beauty and surprising resilience. It can tolerate even light frosts in warm climates, making it one of the best flowers to plant in spring. For unusual blooms, ask your nursery about double-blooming varieties.

4 Bloodroot

This herbaceous spring perennial flower makes its appearance in March, shooting small white flowers that last until late spring. Bloodroot is best suited to a shade or woodland garden.

5 Grecian Windflower

Growing from a hard, lumpy tuber that is best planted in fall, the Grecian windflower is a type of anemone. It produces daisy-like flowers for several weeks, and they are all covered in ferny foliage. You can find air flowers in shades of blue, pink, white, and both.

6 Celandine Poppy

One of the first flowers to bloom in spring, the celandine poppy produces beautiful yellow and orange flowers. Also known as wood poppies, this plant looks like a delicate wildflower when in bloom.

7 Dutchman's Breeches

A variety of bleeding hearts, the flowers on the Dutchman's breeches look more like a pair of trousers turned upside down than a heart (hence the name). The flowers are pink or white, in clusters of 10 or more on a stem.

8 Grape Hyacinth

Like other spring bulbs, grape hyacinths trumpet the arrival of spring. Clusters of flowers hang fragrantly from sturdy stalks resembling bunches of grapes; They are one of the best and most beautiful flowers to plant in spring.

9 Crocus

Heralding the departure of winter with beautiful pink, purple, yellow, or white petals, crocuses are one of the best early spring flowers. Planted from corms (swollen stem bases, similar to tubers), crocuses range from delicate flowers to more exotic versions.

A successful small garden requires a big idea

You can let a large garden develop. And by 'large' I mean a garden more than 80 feet (25 m) long. All of the most successful small gardens I've seen lately have a strong idea behind them. In a small space, you can see everything at once, so it's important that everything looks good together. This principle applies regardless of shape, although many small gardens are wider than they are long. See here for general tips on the Shallow Wide Garden . Here are three successful small space garden ideas to inspire you. A plant-lover's garden After visiting Philip Ostenbring's garden (open once a year for NGS), I realized that a small outdoor space for unusual plants is a wonderful display area. There is no need to plant in a small space, in threes or in drifts, as the plants are very close to you. Each model looks great in a courtyard, terrace or patio garden. Whereas if you dot a variety of single plants around a large garden, everything can look out of p

The limited space means every detail counts, from plant selection to hardscaping, with every element having a big visual impact. When you're planning a small outdoor space, these creative small garden design ideas will help bring out its unique characteristics. 1. Use a corner for visual interest This small garden looks surprisingly lush and full, thanks to the tall plants. By using dense foliage and large-leaved species, you can ensure your miniature space makes a bold impact. A variety of stones add to the overall style, filling spaces with color and texture Related Post -     Summer-blooming shrubs are very easy to grow 2. Corner bench and vertical garden This clever garden is a brilliant use of space. Instead of sacrificing seating, the designer created a tall bench and placed shade-loving plants underneath. On the outside of the house, two rows of wall-mounted plants catch

Great Designs for Container Groupings

Once your single containers are ready to merge It's hard to fail with a group of containers. Any size group, from a simple couple to large multiples, can enhance any outdoor space. Open patios and decks become softer and more intimate when you place pots around them. A straight and simple outdoor path lined with containers can become a wave of sorts—a formal one with some plants or an informal path with others. You never know what you'll come up with by placing one pot next to another or a particular plant with others. Once you start experimenting, you'll notice many places where a container is grouped. 1. Combine bright colors This collection of colorful pots introduces the viewer to the vivid color scheme in the beds behind it, mainly blue flowers. However, to maintain exclusivity, pots get exclusive rights to colors like magenta, pink and chartreuse. 2. Formal lateralization A combination of papyrus and vases always looks elegant, but when placed side by sid
