Color for front yards
Whether you have a modest-sized yard or fill large spaces, these varieties are a perfect fit. They may not reach towering heights, but small trees can pack an even bigger punch in your landscape. Whether you have a modest-sized yard or run out of room to add more plants, these varieties are perfect.
1. Crabapple
Add spectacular seasonal flair to your landscape with crabapples. There is a wide array with flowers in white, pink and red colors. Although they have weeping, rounded or columnar habits, they are known for producing orange, gold, red or burgundy fruit. 'Prairiefire' is a unique variety with deep pink flowers, reddish-purple leaves and excellent disease resistance. Another popular small tree for landscaping is 'Centurion' with rose-pink flowers, upright form and excellent disease resistance.
2. Redbud
Redbutt is an easy-to-grow small tree with delightful heart-shaped leaves that turn golden-yellow in fall, with pink or white flowers that show off in spring. 'Forest Pansy' is a unique variety with purple leaves that turn dark green in late summer. See also 'Silver Cloud', which has white-spotted leaves. 'Royal White' clearly stands out from other flowering tree species with its pure-white flowers.
3. Grape myrtle
A common sight in Southern gardens, the crape myrtle offers large clusters of flowers in shades of pink, red, lavender, or white in summer and fall. Many varieties display beautiful red, yellow, or orange leaves in fall, with interesting patches of green or silver on the undersides of their peeling cinnamon-colored bark. 'Arapahoe' is a unique variety with red flowers and purple leaves and good disease resistance. 'Catawpa' is an excellent choice with purple flowers, brilliant fall color and good disease resistance.
4. Flowering dogwood
One of the most beautiful North American native trees, the flowering dogwood has pink or white spring flowers, bright red fruits in late summer, and brilliant purple-red fall foliage. If you're looking for a somewhat unique dogwood, check out 'Cherokee Sunset' for its variety of green and pink flowers. Check out 'Cloud Nine', a floral variety with extra large flowers.
5. Kousa Dogwood
Count on kousa dogwood to put on a spectacular spring show with attractive pink or white flowers. This small ornamental tree continues to function after spring. It has red fruit in late summer and stunning red-purple fall foliage. It is generally more resistant to disease than its North American cousin, the flowering dogwood. If you're looking for a variety with lots of flowers, plant 'Milky Way'. Another great bloomer with pink flowers is 'Satomi'.
6. Saucer Magnolia
Offering some of the most beautiful blooms of any tree, the saucer magnolia features large blooms in shades of white, pink, and purple in late spring. Its showy nature makes it a perfect small front yard tree.
7. Fringe Tree
Native to parts of eastern North America, the fringe tree is a versatile plant that you can grow as a large shrub or small tree. Edge trees offer clouds of fragrant white flowers in late spring that turn into clusters of bluish-purple fruits in fall. Fruits are sure to attract birds.
8. Golden chain tree
Spectacular in bloom in late spring and early summer, the golden chain tree produces hanging clusters of yellow flowers that resemble wisteria. Its flowers lead to seeds that ripen in autumn. The green, clover-like foliage of the tree is attractive.
9. Carolina Silverbell
Enjoy a delightful early spring show by Carolina Silverbell. This small ornamental tree (or large shrub, depending on how you prune it) displays hanging clusters of white bell-shaped flowers. Later in autumn, its foliage turns yellow. Named varieties of this tree can be hard to come by, but look for 'Rosia' with pink flowers or 'Tyler's Variegated' with yellow and green leaves.
