Varieties of Tuberous Begonia

Smart Garden Tuberous Begonia

Tuberous begonias are beautiful plants with double flowers reminiscent of camellia flowers or mini roses. As their name suggests, although they are perennials that grow from tubers, they are often grown as annuals. Tuberous begonias are hardy in the warmer climates of zones 9-11 but still prefer mild summers. They also grow well in containers and can make a colorful addition to your houseplant collection.

Tuberous begonias have flowers in almost every color (except blue and purple). They are monoecious, meaning they bloom with both male and female flowers on the same plant. Female flowers appear first, often with single petals and flower parts that emerge in rows. Then the attractive male flowers appear as a cluster of petals, hiding the hidden flower parts. Tuberous begonias bloom all summer long, providing a constant display of color. Since plants naturally drop their spent flowers, you don't need to do much deadheading. This, of course, can make for a messy situation—especially hanging baskets in high-traffic areas. Therefore, it is best to place container-grown plants where leaf litter is not a problem.

Gardening Plants you can walk on

These tough little floor coverings can withstand occasional trampling Mulching the 3 acres of display and test gardens in my perennial nursery turned out to be expensive and time-consuming, so I decided to investigate ground covers that eliminated the need for mulch. As I experimented with several ground covers to complement my perennials and shrubs, I was struck by the plants that were strong enough to withstand the foot traffic of people strolling through my gardens and trampling pets. It was clear which ones were hardy enough to withstand the heat and humidity we experience each summer, stay evergreen, and display beautiful flowers for months. Here are my favorites. 1. Green carpet rupturewort: The toughest of the tough I often refer to Green Carpet Rapturewort as my "tractor-trailer" plant because even though stray vehicles sometimes make deep impacts in my garden, the rapture never turns yellow. Creeping stems of small, bright green leaves form a dense green...
